It's B-a-a-c-k: New York Governor Reintroduces Soda Tax Proposal
January 28th, 2010
Albany, N.Y., January 28, 2010 -- New York Governor David Paterson has included a one cent-per ounce tax on non-diet soft drinks as part of the state's proposed 2010-2011 budget. Diet soft drinks would be exempt under the proposal.
Paterson originally proposed the tax last year, but it was soundly rejected by the state legislature after intense lobbying by a number of business associations and tax-reform groups.
The Governor's office estimates that the tax would generate more than $400 million annually in an attempt to help close New York's $7.4 billion deficit -- and would aid in the state's efforts to fight obesity.
Stay tuned.
